Toronto Raptors Wiki and History

To trace the origin of the Raptors, we have to understand the team came about due to the NBA’s interest in expanding into Canada in the 1980s. In 1946, there had been an NBA game played in Toronto, Canada but that was the last time it was hosted until later in the century.

On November 4th, 1993, the NBA Board of Governors approved the expansion and for a record fee of USD$125 million, a Toronto team headed by Canadian businessman, John I. Bitove Jr. joined the league. This team is now known as the Toronto Raptors. The name was arrived at on May 15th, 1994.

Alongside the Vancouver Grizzlies (another Canadian team that once participated at the NBAs), the Raptors played their first game on November 3rd, 1995.

The first Raptors superstar, Vince Carter joined the team during the 1998 drafts. He helped the team reach their first playoff berth during the 1999/2000 season. In the next season, the Raptors qualified for the postseason and later went on to advance into the conference semifinals which they eventually lost.

The Toronto Raptors have won seven (7) division titles in total which were all in the following years; 2007, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020.

In 2020, due to the Covid 19 pandemic, the team had to temporarily move from Canada to Tampa, Florida, USA. Their arena was temporarily changed from Scotiabank Arena to Amalie Arena.

So far in 2021, the Toronto Raptors have won one conference title and one NBA championship. These titles were both in 2019. The Toronto Raptors currently play in the Eastern Conference of the National Basketball Association (NBA).
