Elon Musk Biography

On June 28th, 1971, Elon Reeve Musk was born and raised in Pretoria, South Africa to a South African father (Errol Musk) and a Canadian mother (Maye Musk). At an early stage, Elon had developed an interest in computers and programming. By the time he was 12 years old, he built his first game known as Space Blaster.

He attended both Bryanston High School & Pretoria Boys High School and during his childhood days, he was an introvert. Musk was also a victim of bullying and was once hospitalized at Sandton, South Africa after he was thrown down a flight of stairs. This was at Bryanston High School which then forced him to move to Pretoria Boys High School. He later proceeded to the University of Pretoria where he studied for five (5) months before he later left for Canada.

In 1990, he was admitted to Queens University in Kingston, Ontario. He later got the golden opportunity to move to the United States of America in 1992 when he got a scholarship to study at the University of Pennsylvania. As a kid, he has always wanted to move to the USA where all the “cool stuff” was happening.

In 1995, he was accepted for a Ph.D. program at Stanford but decided to drop out in his third year and launch an internet-based startup due to the internet boom sweeping the US at that time.

That same year he dropped out from Stanford, he founded his first startup named “Zip5”. He founded it alongside his friends, Kimbal and Greg Khouri while receiving funds from Angel investors. The company provided city guides on the internet and before it became successful Elon was poor as he couldn’t even afford an apartment. In February 1999, Compaq bought Zip5 for $307 million while Musk received $22 million as his own share.

That same year, he co-founded another startup named X.com which later became what is now known as PayPal. Although, it wasn’t named that until 2001. The startup was later acquired by eBay for a whopping $1.5 billion in stock of which Musk received $100 million. This was in 2002.

As far back as 2001, the foundation for his space exploration company had begun. He had tried purchasing used Intercontinental Ballistic Missiles but was rejected the first time and the price for one rocket was too high for him. This led him to use his own funds to start what is now known as SpaceX. The goal back then was to build more affordable rockets.

His company failed in launching their first three (3) rockets but succeeded on their fourth trial which was the Falcon 1 in 2008. Hence, became the first private rocket to leave Earth. Ever since then, the space company has gone on to bigger projects and shatter more records. In May 2020, it was the first private company to send a crew into space and dock them at the International Space Station (ISS).

Tesla wasn’t originally owned by Musk as he only became involved with the auto company in 2004 after leading a Seria A investment round and became Tesla’s Chairman on the board of directors. He had full control of the company in 2008 after one of the original Tesla co-founders, Martin Eberhard was ousted from the company.

Elon Musk has been able to scale the company to greater heights and in 2020 after seeing a rise in the stock prices, Tesla became the most valuable carmaker in the world. Apart from Tesla and SpaceX, Musk still has other projects which include Neuralink and The Boring Company.
