Coca Cola Company Wiki and History
The company has been around for over a century and close to two! The most famous product manufactured by the company is a soft drink called Coca-Cola which is also known as Coke. Although they do have other brand which we would highlight in this post later.
We can trace the company’s history to the American Civil War. A Confederate Colonel, whose name was John Pemberton. He was an addict to morphine and at that time was looking for a replacement in order to cure his addiction. Fortunately, Pemberton already had a medical degree and this was instrumental to the development of Coca-Cola.
In the year 1885, he registered Pemberton’s French Wine Coca which was an alcoholic beverage mixed with coca, African Kola Nut and damiana. A year later, Pemberton developed the non alcoholic version of his beverage, this was called Coca-Cola.
In the late 80s, the drink became a success and this was due to a major number of reasons. At that time, in the United States, it was believed that carbonated water was “good for the health”. Another factor was the fact that Pemberton marketed it as a medicine, while claiming it could cure morphine addiction, indigestion, nerve disorders, headaches, and impotence.
When we talk about the history of this company, we cannot do without mentioning a man named Asa Candler. Candler had claimed under testimony that he had acquired a stake in the company as early as 1887, although not written but through a verbal statement. In 1888, a partnership was formed between Pemberton and four other business men from Atlanta.
Then, Pemberton had declared that the name “Coca-Cola” belonged to his son, Charley Pemberton and this made him a major shareholder in the company. This made him a rival to Asa Candler.
On the 16th of August, 1888, Col. John Pemberton died and thus, Candler began the process to take control of the company. He purchased the rights to the name “Coca-Cola” which belong to Charley Pemberton and on August 30th, 1888, Asa Candler became the sole proprietor of the company.
In 1892, he re incorporated the company as “The Coca Cola Company” which is the current company we do know today.
In 1914, a woman named Margaret Dozier claimed to be an original shareholder in the company had claimed that her signature was forged on the bill of sale. Investigations into her claims revealed that this was true as well as John Pemberton’s signature. 5 years later, in 1919, the company was purchased by investors for $25 million and it was re incorporated in Delaware. 500,000 of its shares were offered publicly and were sold for as high as $40 per share.
Ever since then, Coca Cola has grown to become one of the biggest companies not just in the United States of America but also on a global scale.
