Atlantic Records Wiki and History
The founders of the music label, Ahmed Ertegun and Herb Abramson were both fans of Jazz and Rythm & Blues. The label was officially incorporated as a company in October 1947 with Abramson as President and Ertegun as Vice President.
The company went on to become the most successful independent record label out of New York City (NYC) in the 1950s. Some of the first records released by the imprint were solely focused on modern jazz.
In 1953, Jerry Wexler who is best known for coining the name “Rhythm and Blues” left Billboard and joined Atlantic Music. He played a huge role in the label’s success especially in the 1950s. Wexler brought in great acts such as Ray Charles, Joe Turner, and Aretha Franklin into the label.
Meanwhile, earlier that year (1953) around Feburary, Herb Abramson had been drafted into the US Army and was serving in Germany although he still remained as President. By the time he got back in 1955, he relaized he had been replaced by Jerry Wexler. In 1958, Abramson left the label after his relations with some of the exceutives in the company went south.
His departure paved way for Ahmet Ertegun to become the President of Atlantic Music. Wexler and Nesuhi Ertegun (Ahmet Ertegun’s older brother) became Executive Vice President & General Manager and Executive VP of the LP departemant respectively.
Abramson’s ex wife, Miriam Bienstock who had joined the company earlier wasn’t left out as she bceame Vice-President and the President of the label’s publishing unit, Progressive Music. Wexler held the position of executive vice-president at Progressive Music while the Ertegun brothers were both VPs.
In 1967, Jerry Wexler wanted the label to be bought out by a larger record label but Ahmet Ertegun (the President at that time) had no intentions of selling the company. The company was later sold to Warner Bros.-Seven Arts for $17.5 million on October 1967. This was a deal they later regretted as it didn’t reflect the true worth of the company.
The company ever since then has gone on to sign some of the greatest stars on the planet and currently they boast of acts like Cardi B, Coldplay and Ed Sheeran. It is also important to note that their contract might have expired by the time you are reading this post.
